Our mission at BMC is to provide excellent care through a multi-specialty approach from prevention to intervention of potentially life-threatening health problems. Seeking a Weekend Lab Assistant for our Kernersville Lab location.
Summary of Position:
The Weekend Lab Assistant performs the general daily specimen receiving processes as set forth by the laboratory guidelines. The Weekend Lab Assistant monitors specimen logs and manifests to ensure acceptable specimens are received in the laboratory for testing. The Weekend Lab Assistant immediately notifies the General Supervisor of any problems or concerns.
Responsibilities:
- Receives specimens by un-bagging them and confirming samples received match those listed on the sample manifest from the individual stations
- Creates orders, prints labels, and/or prints requisitions as needed in the Harvest LIS system
- Sorts samples according to analyzer and creates racks for each
- Rejects or cancels samples according to Laboratory Sample Rejection protocols
- Pours off urine samples from urine cups to the appropriate tube for analysis
- Creates orders for specimens that should be sent out to reference labs
- Performs individual specimen checks and discards samples per the laboratory’s defined schedule for sample storage and purging.
- Processes Occupational Health urine samples
- Completes daily temperature logs and notifies the supervisor when any temperature is out of range
- Answers telephone calls and inquiries from various stations within Bethany Medical Center
- Provides a safe environment from physical, chemical, and biological hazards.
- Performs other related duties as negotiated.
Education/Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent
Continuing Education (CE) Requirements:
- Although there are no continuing specific education requirements, CLIA and COLA encourages CE for all laboratory staff.
- Bethany requires at least 4 continuing education units every 2 years.
Typical Mental Demands:
- Must be able to analyze variables and choose an effective course of action. Must react favorably in stressful situations.
- Must be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people.
- Emotional stability and personal maturity are important attributes in this position.
Physical Demands:
- Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to operate laboratory instruments and a computer.
- Requires a normal range of hearing and color vision.
- Requires standing, reaching, and lifting of up to ~ 50 pounds.
Working Conditions:
- Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 6 pm. First shift.
- Occasionally called on to work overtime.
